I think this is because they are so versatile and completely timeless. You can paint them, or cover them in paper, ink, clay, or glitter. Pretty much any type of decoration in fact, or you can leave them as they are to give a neutral background for your creations.
They flat pack, making them easy to store and carry and they take seconds to put together.
